Chapter 54: The Bad Characteristics

851- أَبْغَضُ الرِّجَالِ إِلَى اللهِ الأَلَدُّ الخَصْمُ. البخاري

851. The most hated of men to Allah is the quarrelsome person. (Al-Bukhari)

852- إنَّ مِمَّا أدْرَكَ النَّاسُ مِنْ كَلامِ النُّبُوَّةِ الأُولى: إذَا لَمْ تَسْتَحِ فاصْنَعْ مَا شِئْتَ. البخاري

852. What remains of the previous prophethood is: When you have no sense of shame, then do whatever you want. (Al-Bukhari)

853- إِنَّ اللهَ يَكْرَهُ قِيْلَ وَقَالَ وَإِضَاعَةِ المَالِ وَكَثْرَةِ السُّؤَالِ. البخاري

853. Verily, Allah hates that you gossip, waste money, and question excessively. (Al-Bukhari)

854- إِنَّ شَرَّ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلَةً عِنْدَ اللهِ مَنْ تَرَكَهُ النَّاسُ اتِّقَاءَ شَرِّهِ. متفق عليه

854. The worst man in rank in God’s estimation is he whom people avoid in order to be safe from his evil. (Agreed on)

855- مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ. أبو داود و غيره

855. The one who imitates a people is really one of them. (Abu Daud and others)

856- مَنْ تَتَبَّعَ عَوْرَةَ أَخِيْهِ المُسْلِمِ تَتَبَّعَ اللهُ عَوْرَتَهُ وَمَنْ تَتَبَّعَ اللهُ عَوْرَتَهُ فَضَحَهُ. أحمد

856. Whosoever seeks out the defects of his brother Muslim, Allah will seek out his defects; and the one whom Allah seeks defects in, He will (truly) disgrace him. (Ahmad)

857- مِنْ عَلَامَاتِ الشَّقَاءِ جُمُوْدُ العَيْنِ وَقَسْوَةُ القَلْبِ وَشِدَّةُ الحِرْصِ فِي طَلَبِ الدُّنْيَا وَالإِصْرَارُ عَلَى الذَّنْبِ. الحاكم

857. Of the signs of being damned are: being without remorse, being hard-hearted, excessive greed in seeking (the pleasures) of this world, and persistence in a certain bad deed. (Al-Haakim)

858- كُلُّ أُمَّتِي مُعَافَى إِلَّا المُجَاهِرِيْنَ الَّذِيْ يَعْمَلُ العَمَلَ بِالَّلَيْلِ فَيَسْتُرَهُ رَبُّهُ ثُمَّ يُصْبِحُ فَيَقُوْلُ يَا فُلَانُ إِنِّي عَمِلْتُ البَارِحَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَيَكْشِفُ سِتْرَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجّلَّ. متفق عليه

858. All of my community is excused except those who expose themselves: those who do (bad) deeds in the night and his Lord covers it up, then the morning comes and he says, “Oh so-and-so, I did such-and-such a deed yesterday,” thereby uncovering the veil of Allah Most Mighty and Majestic. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

859- مَنْ نَظَرَ فِي كِتَابِ أَخِيْهِ بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا يَنْظُرُ فِي النَّارِ. وَسَلُوا اللهَ بِبِطُونِ أَكُفَكُمْ وَلا تَسْأَلُوْهُ بِظُهُورِهَا فَإذا فَرَغْتُم فَامْسُحوا بِها وُجوْهَكُم. الديلمي عن أنس

859. Narrated by Anas: Whosoever looks at the private affairs of his brother without his permission, it is as though he is looking at the Fire; and ask Allah with open hands and do not ask Allah with hands downturned; and when you finish your supplication, wipe your faces. (Al-Dailami)

860- إِنَّ اللهَ يُبْغِضُ كُلَّ جَعْظَرِيٍّ جَوَاظٍ صَخَّابٍ فِي الأَسْوَاقِ جِيْفَةٌ بِالَّلَيْلِ حِمَارٌ بِالنَّهَارِ عَالِمٌ بَأَمْرِ الدُّنْيِا جَاهِلٌ بَأَمْرِ الآخِرَةِ. أحمد

860. Indeed Allah hates the corse-natured, arrogant person that makes much clamor in the markets, who is a corpse at night and a donkey by day, and who is learned about life and ignorant about the hereafter. (Ahmad)

861- سَيُصِيْبُ أُمَّتِي دَاءَ الأُمَمِ ، الأَشَرُ وَالبَطَرُ وَالتَّكَاثُرُ وَالتَّشَاحُنُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالتَّبَاغُضُ وَالتَّحَاسُدُ حَتَّى يَكُوْنَ البَغْيُ. الحاكم

861. My people will be afflicted with the diseases of previous nations: the ingratitude, the bitterness, the rivalry for getting the best from this life, the hatred, and the envy, until it will be the transgression. (Al-Haakim)

862- شَرُّ مَا فِي الرَّجُلِ شُحٌّ هَالِعٌ وَجُبْنٌ خَالِعٌ. أحمد

862. The worst traits in man are impatient greed and unrestrained cowardice. (Ahmad)

863- قِتَالُ المُسْلِمِ كُفْرٌ وَسُبَابُهُ فُسُوْقٌ وَلا يَحِلُّ لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ أَخَاهُ فَوْقَ ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ. أحمد

863. Trying to kill a Muslim is disbelief, and its curses derail (from Islam). And it is not permissible for a Muslim to be estranged from his brother for more than three days. (Ahmad)

864- إِيُّاكُمْ وَالغُلُوَّ فِي الدِّيْنِ فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِالغُلُوِّ فِي الدِّيْنِ. أحمد

864. Be aware of excessiveness in religion, for indeed those who were before you were destroyed by excessiveness in religion. (Ahmad)

865- إِيَّاكُمْ وَالظَّنَّ فَإِنَّ الظَّنَّ أَكْذَبُ الحَدِيْثَ. البخاري

865. Be aware of suspicion, for (spreading) suspicion is the most deceitful of speech. (Al-Bukhari)

866- مَا ضَلَّ قَوْمٌ بَعْدَ هُدَىً كَانُوا عَلَيْهِ إَلَّا أُوْتُوا الجَدَلَ ثُمَّ تَلا قَوْلَهُ تَعَالَى: وَقَالُوا أَآلِهَتُنَا خَيْرٌ أَمْ هُوَ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ إِلَّا جَدَلاً بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ خَصِمُونَ. الترمذي

866. No people have gone astray after (being on) guidance except when their guidance was replaced by argument. Then he recited the words of The Most High: They said, who is better, our gods or him (Jesus)? They do not strike it (the similtude) except to dispute; nay, but they are a quarrelsome people. [Qur’an Az-Zukhruf:58] (At-Tirmithi)

867- مَنْ يُحْرَمُ الرِّفْقَ يُحْرَمِ الخَيْرَ كُلَّهُ. أحمد

867. He who is depraved of kindness is depraved of good. (Ahmad)

868- وَيْلٌ لِلَّذِيْ يُحَدِّثُ فَيَكْذِبُ لِيُضْحِكَ بِهِ القَوْمَ وَيْلٌ لَهُ وَيْلٌ لَهُ. أحمد

868. Woe to the one who speaks lies in order to make the people laugh, woe to him, woe to him! (Ahmad)

869- طُوْبَى لِمَنْ شَغَلَهُمْ عَيْبُهُمْ عَنْ عُيُوْبِ النَّاسِ. الديلمي

869. Blessed is he who is preoccupied with his own faults over (seeing) faults of others. (Ad-Dailami)
