Chapter 56: The Virtues of Mosques

879- أَحَبُّ البِلادِ إِلَى اللهِ مَسَاجِدُهَا وَأَبْغَضُ البِلادِ إِلَى اللهِ أَسْوَاقَهَا. مسلم

879. The most beloved places to Allah are the masaajid, and the most hated places to Allah are the marketplaces. (Muslim)

880- مَنْ بَنَى مَسْجِدَاً يَبْتَغِي بِهِ وَجْهَ اللهِ بَنَىَ اللهُ لَهُ مِثْلَهُ فِي الجَنَّةِ. البخاري

880. Whosoever builds a mosque seeking the face of Allah, Allah builds him its like in Paradise. (Al-Bukhari)

881- مَنْ غَدَا إِلَى المَسْجِدِ أَوْ رَاْحَ أَعَدَّ اللهُ لَهُ فِي الجَنَّةِ نُزُلَاً كُلَّمَا غَدَا أَو رَاْحَ. متفق عليه

881. Whosoever sets out for the mosque in the morning or evening, Allah will prepare for him a dwelling in Paradise every morning or evening. (Agreed on)

882- لا يَتَوَضَّأَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَيُحْسِنُ الوُضُوْءَ وَيُسْبِغُهُ ثُمَّ يَأْتِي المَسْجِدَ لَا يُرِيْدُ إِلَا الصَّلَاةَ فِيْهِ إِلَّا تَبَشْبَشَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهُ كَمَا يَتَبَشْبَشُ أَهْلُ الغَائِبِ لِطَلْعَتِهِ. أحمد

882. Nobody performs ablution then perfects it and does it properly, then goes to the mosque intending nothing other than praying in it, but the Most Mighty and Majestic is glad with him as the family of the absent person is glad with his sudden appearance. (Ahmad)

883- إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدَكُمْ المَسْجِدَ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ. البخاري

883. Whenever any one of you enters the mosque, let him/her pray two rakah before sitting. (Al-Bukhari)

884- إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمُ المَسْجِدَ فَلْيَقُلْ اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَإِذَا خَرَجَ فَلْيَقُلْ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ. مسلم

884. Whenever one of you enters the masjid let him say: Allahumma iftah li abwaaba rahmatik - Oh Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy; and whenever he exits, let him say: Allahumma inni as’alulka min fadhlik - Oh Allah, I ask you from Your bounty. (Muslim)

885- لا تَقُوْمُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَتَبَاهَى النَّاسُ فِي المَسَاجِدِ. أحمد

885. The hour will not be established until the people compete with each other in their mosques (i.e., seek to outdo each other by building loftier and more ornate structures). (Ahmad)

886- مَنْ سَمِعَ رَجُلَاً يَنْشِدُ فِي المَسْجِدِ ضَالَّتَهُ فَلْيَقُلْ لا أَدَّاهَا اللهُ إِلَيْكَ فَإِنَّ المَسَاجِدَ لمْ تُبْنَ لِذَلِكَ. مسلم

886. Whosoever hears a man crying for something he has lost in the masjid, let him say, “May Allah not give it back to you, for the mosques were not built for that.” (Muslim)

887- البُصَاقُ فِي المَسْجِدِ خَطِيْئَةٌ وَكَفَّارَتُهَا دَفْنُهَا. متفق عليه

887. Spitting in the mosque is a sin, and its expiation is to cover it up. (Agreed on)

888 - اِبْنُوا مَسَاجِدَكُمْ جَمَّا، وابْنُوا مَدَائِنِكُمْ مُشْرِفَة . ابن أبي شيبة

Build your masajid modestly; and build your cities well. (Ibn Abi Shaibah)

889- مَنْ بَنَى مَسْجِدَاً كَمِفْحَصِ قَطَاةٍ أَو أَصْغَرَ بَنَى اللهُ لَهُ بَيْتَاً فِي الجَنَّةِ. ابن ماجه

889. Whosoever builds a mosque like the nest of the Qata (a type of bird) or smaller, Allah builds him a house in Paradise. (Ibn Maajah)
