Chapter 4: The Qur’an

49- إِنَّ لِله أَهْلِيْنَ مِنَ النَّاسِ قَاْلُواْ مَنْ هُمْ يَاْ رَسُولَ الله قَاْلَ هُمْ أَهْلُ القُرْآنِ أَهْلَ اللِه وخَاْصَّتَهُ. النسائي والحاكم

49. Indeed Allah has families among the people. They said, “Who are they?” He said, “The people of Qur’an. They are the family of Allah and the special ones by his side.” (Al-Nasaai and Al-Haakim)

50- خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ القُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ. البخاري

50. The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it. (Al-Bukhari)

51- يُقَالُ لِصَاْحِبِ القُرْآنِ اِقْرَأْ وَارْقَ وَرّتِلْ كَمَاْ كُنْتَ تُرَتِّلُ فِي الدُّنْيا فِإنَّ مَنِزْلَتَكَ عِنْدَ آخِرِ آَيَةٍ تَقْرَؤُهَاْ. الترمذي

51. It will be said to the person of the Qur’an, "Read and get higher as you used to recite in life; your level will be at the last ayah that you read." (At-Tirmithi)

52- يَقُوُلُ الرَّبُ تَباركَ وَتَعَالَى: مَنْ شَغَلَهُ القُرْآنُ عَنْ مَسْأَلِتي أَعْطَيْتُهُ أَفْضَلَ مَاْ أُعْطِي السَّائِلِيَن. الترمذي

52. The Lord, Glorified and Blessed is He, says, "Whosoever the Qur’an makes him busy from asking Me, I will give him better than what I give the askers." (At-Tirmithi)

53- تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمٍ أَمْرَيْنِ لَنْ تَضِلُّوا ما تَمَسَّكْتُمْ بِهِما كِتَابَ الله وسُنَّةَ رَسُولِ اللِه. مسلم

53. I had left two things with you, and you will not be astray as long as you hold on to them, the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of Rasulullah. (Muslim)

54- أَشْرَافُ أًمِتَّي حَمَلَةُ القُرآنِ وَأَصْحَابُ اللَّيْلِ. الطبراني

54. The people of honor of my Ummah are the holders of the Qur’an and the people of the night (i.e. those who pray in the night). (At-Tabaraani)

55- إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ الّذيِ لَيْسِ فِي جَوْفِهِ مَنْ القُرآنِ شَيءٌ كَالَبْيتِ الخِرَبِ. أحمد

55. The man who does not have any of the Qur’an inside him (i.e. who memorizes nothing from the Qur’an) is like a house, destroyed. (Ahmad)

56- أَقْرَأَنِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلى حَرْفٍ واحدٍ فَرَاجَعْتُهُ فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَسْتَزْيدُهُ ويِزيدُني حُتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ. مسلم

56. Gabriel had read the Qur’an to me in one way (i.e. one of the seven ways of reading the Qur’an). I kept requesting more and he gave me more until he gave me seven ways to recite. (Muslim)

57- الَّذي يَقْرَأُ القُرآنَ وَهُوَ مَاْهِرٌ بِهِ مَعَ السَّفَرَةِ الكِرامِ الَبَرَرَةِ والذَّي يَقْرَاُهُ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ شَاقٌّ لَهُ أَجْرَانِ. أحمد

57. The one who reads the Qur’an in the professional manner is with the ascending honorable righteous angels, but the one who finds difficulty reading it will have his reward multiplied. (Ahmad)

58- لَمْ يَفْقَهِ القُرآنَ مَنْ قَرَأَ القُرآنَ في أَقَلَّ مِنْ ثَلَاْثٍ. الترمذي

58. He has not understood the Qur’an, who reads it in less than three days. (At-Tirmithi)

59- مِنْ قَرَأَ "يَس..." فِي لَيْلَةٍ اْبتِغاَءَ وَجْهِ اللِه غَفَرَ لَهُ. مالك

59. The one who recites Suratu Yaseen during the night for the pleasure of Allah will be forgiven. (Maalik)

60- إِنَّ سُورَةً فِي القُرآنِ ثَلَاِثَينَ آيَةً شَفِعَتْ لِرْجُلٍ حتىَّ غُفِرَ لَهُ "تَبَارَكَ الذَّيِ بِيَدِهِ الُملْكُ". مالك والحاكم والترمذي

60. There is a Surah in the Qur’an with 30 verses that intercedes for a man until Allah has forgiven him; it is the Surah of Tabarak allazi biyadihi almulk. (i.e. Suratu-l-Mulk) (Maalik, Al-Hakim, and At-Tirmithi)

61- اْقَرأُوْا عَلَى مَوْتاكُمْ "يَس..." . أحمد.

61. Read Yaseen for your dead ones. (Ahmad)

62- مَنْ قَرَأَ آيَةَ الكُرِسّيِ دُبُرَ كُلِّ صَلَاْةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ لَمْ يَمْنَعْهُ ِمَنْ دُخُوِل الَجَّنةِ إلَّا أَنْ يَمُوتَ. النسائي

62. Whosoever reads Ayatu-l-Kursi after each obligatory prayer, nothing would prevent him from entering Paradise after he dies. (Al-Nasaai)

63- مَنْ قَرَأَ سُوَرَة الكَهْفِ فِي يَوْمِ الجُمُعَةِ أَضَاْءَ لَهُ مِنَ النُّورِ مَاْ بَيْنَ الجُمُعَتَيْنِ. الحاكم

63. Whosoever reads Suratu-l-Kahif on Friday will be enlightened between the two Fridays. (Al-Haakim)

64- يَاْ رَسُولَ الله أَيُّ العَمَلِ أَحَبُّ إلى الله قَاْلَ الْحَالُّ الُمْرَتحِلُ قالَ وَمَا الحَالُّ الُمْرَتِحلُ؟ قَالَ الَّذِي يَضْرَبُ منْ أَوَّلِ الُقرآنِ إلى آخِرِهِ كُلُّماَ حَلَّ ارْتحَلَ. الترمذي

64. A man asked, “Oh Messenger of Allah, which is the most beloved deed to Allah?” He said, “Al-Haall Al-Murtahil, the one who rests and travels.” They asked, “What is Al-Haall Al-Murtahil, the one who rests and travels?” He answered, “The one who recites the entire Qur’an continually is like a traveler who takes the rest to resume traveling." (At-Tirmithi)

65- الْحَمْدُ لله رَبِّ العَالَمِيَن أُمُّ القُرْآنِ وَأُمُّ الكِتَابِ والسَّبْعُ المَثاِني . أبو داود

65. “Al-hamdu lillahi rabbi al-‘alameen” is the mother of the Qur’an, the mother of the book, and the seven repeatedly recited verses. (Abu Daud)

66- لَاْ تَجْعَلُوا بُيُوتَكُمْ مَقَابِرَ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يِفِرُّ مِنْ الَبْيتِ الَّذِي يُقْرَأُ فِيهِ سُوَرةُ البَقَرِةَ. مسلم

66. Don't make your houses as graves; the devil runs away from the house wherein Suratu-l-Baqara is read. (Muslim)

67- اقْرَأوُا سُوَرةَ البَقَرَةِ فِإنَّ أَخْذَهَا بَرَكَةٌ وَتَرْكُهَاْ حَسْرَةُ وَلَا تَسْتَطِيُعها البَطَلَةُ. مسلم

67. Read Suratu-l-Baqara because knowing it is a blessing, abandoning it is a sorrow, and magicians cannot harm the one who knows it. (Muslim)

68- إذَاْ زُلْزِلَتْ تَعْدِلُ نصْفَ القُرآَنِ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللُه أَحَدٌ تَعْدِلُ ثُلُثَ القُرْآنِ وَقُلْ يا أَيُّهَاْ الكَافِرُونَ تَعْدلُ رُبْعَ القُرآَنِ. الترمذي

68. “Idha Zulzilat” (i.e. Suratu-l-Zalzala) equals half of the Qur’an, “Qul huwa Allahu ahad” (i.e. Suratu-l-Ikhlas) equals one third of the Qur’an and “Qul ya ayyuha al-kaafiroon” (i.e. Surah-Al-Kaafiroon) equals one fourth of the Qur’an. (At-Tirmithi)

69- أَلَمْ تَرَ آيَاتٌ أُنِزْلَتْ الليلة وَلَمْ يُرَ مِثْلَهُنَّ "قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِ الفَلَقِ" وَ "قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِ النَّاسِ" . مسلم

69. Have you seen the verses that were revealed this night, which no one has seen before? They are “Qul a’udhu birabbi al-falaq” and “Qul a’udhu birabbi an-naas”. (Muslim)

70- مَنْ قَرَأَ قُلْ هُوَ الله أَحَدٌ حَتَّى يَخْتِمَهَاْ عَشْرَ مَرَّاتٍ بَنَى الله لَهُ قَصْراً فِي الَجَّنةِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ إذاً نَسْتَكْثِرُ يَا رَسُولَ الله فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الِله اللهُ أكْثَرُ وَأَطْيَبُ. أحمد

70. Whosoever finished reading Suratu-l-Ikhlas ten times, Allah builds a palace for him in Paradise. Umar said, “Then we may read more.” The Messenger of Allah said, “Allah is most generous and gives more.” (Ahmad)

71- يَا أَبَا الْمنذِرِ أَتَدْرِيِ أَيُّ آَيةٍ في كِتَابِ الله أعْظَمُ قَالَ قُلْتُ اللهُ لا إِلهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الَحيُّ القَيُّومُ قَاْلَ فَضَرَبَ عَلَى صَدْرِي وَقَاَلَ لَيْهنِكَ العِلْمُ يَا أبَا الُمْنذِرِ. مسلم

71. “Abu Al-Munzir! Do you know which ayah in the book of Allah is the greatest?” I said, “It is Ayatu-l-Kursi.” Then the Prophet tapped my chest and said, “Here you go, what excellent knowledge you have, Abu Al-Munzir.” (Muslim)

72- إِنَّ الله ختَمَ سُوَرَة البَقَرَةِ بِآيَتَيْنِ أَعْطَانِيْهِمَا مِنْ كَنْزِهِ الذِّي تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ فَتَعَلَّمُوهُنَّ وَعَلِمّوُهُنَّ نِسَاَءُكْم وَأَبْنَاءَكُمْ فِإنَّهُما صَلَاةٌ وقُرْآنٌ وَدُعَاءٌ. الحاكم

72. Allah has concluded Suratu-l-Baqara with two ayas, which He gave me from under His throne’s treasure. Therefore, learn them and teach them to your women and children. They are a prayer, a Qur’an and a du’aa. (Al-Haakim)

73- مَنْ قَرَأَ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ سُورَةَ الْواقِعةِ لَم تُصِبهُ فَاقَةٌ. البيهقي

73. He will not be in poverty, the one who recites Suratu-l-Waqi’aa every night. (Al-Baihaqi)

74- مَنْ قَرَأَ القُرآنَ وَعَمِلَ بِهِ أُلْبِسَ وَالِدَاهُ يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ تَاْجَاً مِنْ نُوْرٍ ضَوْؤُهُ مِثْلُ ضَوْءِ الشَّمْسِ وَيُكْسَى وَالِدَاهُ حُلتَّيَنِ لا تَقُوْمُ لَهُما الدُّنْيا فَيَقُولَانِ بَم كُسِيْنَا هذَا فَيُقَاَلْ بِأَخْذ وَلَدِكُمَا القُرْآنَ. الحاكم وابن حبان

74. Whosoever reads the Qur’an and applies it, on the Day of Judgment his parents will be crowned with a crown of light whose light is like the light of the sun, and they will be dressed in two garments which are more valuable than the whole world. They will say, “For what have we been dressed in this?” They will be told, “This is because your child took the Qur’an to heart.” (Al-Haakim and Ibn Habban)
