Chapter 51: Swearing

807- إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا بَعْدُ ذَاكِرَاً وَلا نَاسِيَاً. متفق عليه

807. Indeed, Allah has forbidden you from swearing by your fathers. Umar said, “By Allah, I have not sworn by them thereafter, deliberately or forgetfully.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

808- لا تَحْلِفْ بِأَبِيْكَ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ حَلَفَ بِغَيْرِ اللهِ فَقَدْ أَشْرَكَ. أحمد

808. Do not swear by your father, for indeed whosoever swears by other than Allah has committed shirk. (Ahmad)

809- مَنْ كَانَ حَالِفَاً فَلا يَحْلِفْ إِلَّا بِاللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ. أحمد

809. Whosoever swears oaths, let him not swear except by Allah Most Mighty and Magestic. (Ahmad)

810- مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِيْنٍ فَرَأَى خَيْرَاً مِنْهَا فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَلْيُكَفِّرَ عَنْ يَمِيْنِهِ. أحمد

810. Whosoever swears an oath and then sees something better, let him do that which is better and then make expiation for his broken oath. (Ahmad)

811- مَنْ حَلَفَ بِاْلأَمَانَةِ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا. أحمد

811. He who swears by the trust is not one of us. (Ahmad)

812- مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِيْنٍ هُوَ فِيْهَا فَاجِرٌ لِيَقْتَطِعَ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ لَقِيَ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانٌ. أحمد

812. Whosoever swears an oath deceptively to seize the wealth of a Muslim shall meet Allah, Most Mighty and Majestic, angry at him. (Ahmad)

813- إِيَّاكُمْ وَكَثْرَةُ الحَلْفِ فِي البَيْعِ فَإِنَّهُ يَنْفَقُ ثُمَّ يَمْحَقُ. أحمد

813. Do not swear a lot in selling because it (causes) selling without blessing. (Ahmad)

814- لا تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ وَلا بِأُمَّهَاتِكُمْ وَلا بِالأَنْدَادِ وَلا تَحْلِفُوا بِاللهِ عَزَّ وّجَلَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ صَادِقُون. أبو داود والنسائي

814. Swear neither by your fathers, nor by your mothers, nor by those whom you (used) to associate with Allah. Do not swear by other than Allah; and do not swear by Allah, Most Mighty and Glorious, unless you are being truthful. (Abu Daud and An-Nasaai)

815- مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِيْنٍ فَقَالَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ فَقَدْ اسْتَثْنَى. الترمذي

815. Whosoever swears an oath and then says inshallah (i.e., God willing) has made an exception (so that no expiation would later be needed). (At-Tirmithi)

816- وَاللهِ لَأَغْزُوَنَّ قُرَيْشَاً وَاللهِ لَأَغْزُوَنَّ قُرَيْشَاً وَاللهِ لَأَغْزُوَنَّ قُرَيْشَاً ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ. الترمذي

816. By God, I will invade Quraish. By God, I will invade Quraish. By God, I will invade Quraish; and then he said, “Insha Allah.” (At-Tirmithi)
